To repay the loan shark in Nivalis Nights, check Calhoun’s I.O.U. quest. His 5,000-Lim loan carries 20% interest, making the recorded total 6,000 Lims. The repayment routes are an immediate payoff or deductions of 5%, 10% or 15% of daily earnings.
Those are alternatives: paying the debt in full is not a prerequisite for starting daily repayments. This guide follows the recorded quest objectives and game-data interpretation; the exact dialogue choices have not been independently playtested.
Identify Calhoun’s I.O.U. Debt
The opening business story also involves Thaddeus. Check that your journal actually names Calhoun and I.O.U. before applying the amounts below to another obligation.

Calhoun is the lender named in I.O.U.; this portrait is not a repayment interface.
Get a Loan can begin through Ava’s conversation about needing funds, with a recorded money condition below 100 Lims. It then sends you to speak to Calhoun. His offer can lead to I.O.U.; accepting or declining an offer affects whether the quest starts.
The offer is not guaranteed to return after every refusal. The data records a second-chance conversation on one path, while other answers lose the opportunity. Keep a backup before a consequential conversation instead of relying on an unlimited retry.

| Route | Recorded requirement or rate | Journal objective |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate payoff | Enough money to clear the 6,000-Lim total | Pay back Calhoun |
| Daily repayments | 5%, 10% or 15% of daily earnings | Reduce your Debt to Calhoun |
For immediate payment, follow Pay back Calhoun once the journal says you have collected enough Lims. The relevant completion condition is that the debt has been paid and the remaining balance is cleared.
For the gradual route, choose the available percentage and allow repayments to reduce the debt at the end of each day. A higher percentage takes more from the same earnings amount. The records do not establish a fixed number of days, a universal minimum payment, or a separately verified fee for every missed day.
Read the current balance and objective when deciding whether the repayment route is progressing. Having earned 6,000 Lims over several days is not itself proof that all of those earnings were paid toward the loan.
Follow the Salt Pete and Carp Diem Objectives
I.O.U. also records Speak to Salt Pete, concerning Calhoun’s fishing membership, and Speak to Calhoun, where you present a possible way out through the Carp Diem fishing club.
These objectives indicate another conversation route. They do not establish that joining any fishing club automatically cancels the debt, or that one unrecorded answer guarantees a free payoff. Follow the proposition only when it is available in your active quest.
Once the debt has been cleared, Tell Calhoun the Good News directs you to speak to him. Clearing the money obligation and finishing that conversation are separate checkpoints. If the journal has moved to a conversation objective, earning more money alone does not substitute for speaking to him.
